Citrix Service Providers - How much is image and app management costing your business?

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Nov 11, 2016

Most Citrix Service Providers (CSPs) manage their XenApp/XenDesktop hosting environments the same way. Every time they on-board a new customer, they create a new image that contains the Windows OS and all the applications that the customer requires. If the customer has multiple departments with different application needs, then multiple images for that new customer are created.

If you're a CSP, here's what that can cost you, why it takes margin right off of your bottom line, and why it limits how fast you can grow your business. Then we'll show you a better way that lets you on-board new customers without any additional costs.

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Aug 30, 2016

We're back in Las Vegas for VMworld 2016, only a few short months after launching the redesigned Unidesk 4 here at Citrix's annual conference. Unidesk 4 won Best of Citrix Synergy - New Technology for bringing industry-leading application lifecycle and image management innovations to Citrix XenApp and Citrix XenDesktop. It only made sense to announce that Unidesk 4 now offers these same enterprise-class capabilities for VMware Horizon at VMware's big event. That's what we did in today's press release.

Here's a look at 4 of the capabilities that have VMware Horizon customers so excited about the newest update to Unidesk 4.

The 5 Ways to Manage Apps in VDI - Which One is Right for You?

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Jun 23, 2016

Surprisingly, there is still a lot of confusion and misinformation around application delivery and management in both Citrix XenDesktop and VMware Horizon environments. Most of the confusion can be tied back to product evolution, legacy-think, and vendor FUD.

More of VMware's Most Successful Customers Use Unidesk

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Mar 8, 2016

Last year around this time, VMware launched its End User Computing (EUC) YouTube channel with a number of customer testimonials. Almost all of them use Unidesk for Windows application management, so we blogged that VMware’s most successful customers use Unidesk.

VMware is now sponsoring a series of VDI success stories in Windows IT Pro magazine. Every story so far features Unidesk customers. Why are more of VMware's most successful customers using Unidesk, when VMware now offers 3 different application management solutions in App Volumes, Mirage, and ThinApp?

The answers are in the customer stories themselves.

I have a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, what else do I need to deploy Microsoft VDI?

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Oct 8, 2015

If you have a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement (EA), chances are you already own the components you need to deploy Microsoft VDI into a production environment, making virtual desktops and Windows app mobility finally cheaper than a PC refresh. This blog breaks down each of the components needed from both a software and hardware perspective, so you understand how you can deploy Microsoft VDI at scale with in-the-box Windows Server technologies.

"Why Are We Paying Citrix & VMware $400+ Per User to Deliver Windows Apps?"

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Oct 1, 2015

Lately, we've been hearing IT execs ask this more and more. It's becoming the million dollar question - literally. Before, when enterprises bought a PC, they didn't have to pay a third party to put a Windows app on it. Now they're starting to wonder why they're paying VMware and Citrix thousands or even millions of dollars to put the same Windows app on a virtual desktop or publish it from a session host. Especially when they could use in-the-box Windows Server technology they may already own.

Lifecycle Management of Mission Critical Applications on XenApp or RDSH

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Sep 28, 2015

One thing Unidesk is known for is our ability to layer any application and deliver it as a virtual disk container in minutes. Our application layering has proven to be superior to other application delivery models such as bundling apps into an image, isolating apps with application virtualization technology, or using above-the-OS layering technologies that struggle with app compatibility and interoperability issues.

One thing we're not as well known for – but which is becoming immensely valuable to our Citrix XenApp and Microsoft RDSH customers – is our ability to manage the full lifecycle of mission-critical applications.

Windows 10 Virtual Desktops - 5 Reasons To Do Them Together

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Jul 8, 2015

Windows 10 is slated to be released on July 29th. We haven’t seen a Windows release this hotly anticipated since Microsoft came out with Windows 7 way back in July 2009 (hard to believe it has been 6 years!). So what does Windows 10 mean for IT in any small to mid-sized enterprise?

It means this is the perfect time to go virtual. Here are 5 reasons why there's never going to be a better opportunity to migrate your end user computing environment to Windows 10 virtual desktops. And why it makes sense to tackle the P2V migration and Windows 10 upgrade at the same time.

VDI needs to be more about people

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Nov 19, 2014

As geeks, nerds, technology enthusiasts - whatever we like to call ourselves - sometimes we get carried away with technology and lose sight of the bigger picture. By focusing on the HOW, we ignore the WHY, and by ignoring the WHY, we stray from solving business problems.

Customer Advocacy as a Competitive Advantage

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Nov 6, 2014

Four years ago when I joined Unidesk I wrote about our customer-centric culture in a blog post titled "Make the IT People Smile." At the time, we had just come to market with Unidesk 1.0 and only had a few customers, but our mission was simple:

Make our customers wildly successful and in return they will make us wildly successful.

Is Layering a ThinApp Alternative?

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Oct 27, 2014

Is Unidesk layering a ThinApp alternative? This is a question we get asked all the time. Like many answers to questions in IT, it depends on your use case and what you are trying to accomplish.

If you're looking for an easier and more powerful way to deliver applications in VDI, and you'd rather the applications appear as if they are locally installed instead of isolated, then yes.

If you're looking to isolate a subset of your apps in their own "bubbles" so they don't conflict with each other, then no.

A closer look at the two approaches will help you understand when app layering can and cannot be a ThinApp alternative.

A Better Way to Deliver EMR Apps in VDI

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Oct 8, 2014

We previously wrote about the 3 challenges trying to virtualize and deliver EMR apps in VDI. This article will look at how new virtual desktop management technology called "layering" solves all 3 problems. Whether you're using Citrix XenDesktop, Microsoft RDS, or VMware Horizon View for virtual desktop connectivity, layering makes delivering Electronic Medical Record (EMR) software such as Allscripts, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, Epic, McKesson, and Meditech fast and easy for healthcare IT organizations that are moving their Windows desktops to the cloud.

How does Unidesk Layering work? Part 4: SHOW ME THE LAYERS!

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Nov 7, 2013

Often, when first introduced to Unidesk technology, admins will call it “magic”. This response is both flattering and somewhat undeserved! Magic has often been used to describe events or processes that the viewer could not explain. But Unidesk is not magic, it is just really cool technology that is easy to understand once you break it down.

In this series, we will explore how Unidesk layering works. We will look at how file systems are merged or blended. We will review the creation process of our composite registry. We will look at replication and even take a deep look at our conflict resolution mechanisms with the end goal of demystifying our layering!

Meet Jerry: Storage Optimization for VDI

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Oct 2, 2012

Need persistent VDI but thick-provisioned virtual desktops require too much storage?

Meet Jerry.

Most of Jerry's users require persistent virtual desktops. However, Jerry quickly found that thick-provisioning his desktops would require 40-50 GB per VM and still not solve many of his desktop management challenges. So, how did Jerry deploy easy-to-manage persistent virtual desktops on 70% less storage?
