In a previous post, I shared how an enterprise customer will save more than $3 million by using Unidesk to streamline application and image management, expand Citrix XenApp hosted workspaces to all users, and put an end to costly PC refresh cycles. Citrix Service Providers (CSP) are recognizing that the automation and efficiencies provided by Unidesk can greatly impact their bottom lines, too.
Here's a quick look at why large and small CSPs alike are choosing Unidesk to reduce costs, improve service, and on-board more customers without adding more staff. At the end, you'll see how one mid-sized CSP expects to trim more than $1.75 million off of its annual cost of operations, based on the real-world numbers they gave us.Citrix XenDesktop, Citrix XenApp, Citrix Service Provider, Scale | Read this post >
We're winning enterprise customers since the launch of our new, highly scalable Unidesk 4 platform, which now supports VMware Horizon in addition to Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop. The larger size and scope of these projects, however, puts a much greater emphasis on economic return. You can't blame CFOs for wanting to know how fast Unidesk is going to pay for itself and how they'll save money.
One area of impact that has caught their attention is using Unidesk to better leverage existing Citrix XenApp investments instead of perpetuating costly PC refresh cycles. Here's the situation at one healthcare organization, who plans to save more than $3.6 million by not having to buy 3,900 new PCs.Healthcare, ROI, Citrix XenApp, Elastic Layering | Read this post >
While Desktops as a Service (DaaS) can provide infrastructure-free access to Windows apps, there are still challenges:
Unidesk solves these challenges today for Azure IaaS and Azure RemoteApp. We also enable apps to be seamlessly migrated from on-premises VDI and XenApp/RDSH environments to Azure, without having to build new images or re-package apps. These are two of the reasons we won Best of Citrix Synergy for New Technology at Citrix’s annual conference in May.Citrix XenApp, Azure RemoteApp, Citrix XenApp Express | Read this post >
Shared hosted desktops and published apps with Citrix XenApp? Or full virtual machines for every user with Citrix XenDesktop? The Citrix XenApp vs XenDesktop decision used to be pretty clear. But with new application layering innovations that can deliver unique apps and personalization in real-time to every XenApp user, the line between traditional server based computing (XenApp) and VDI (XenDesktop) has been blurred.
This blog summarizes the traditional differences between XenApp and XenDesktop, explains how Unidesk application management software changes the equation, and then provides a new decision matrix for the two Citrix hosted workspace solutions, so you can decide which is right for you, your users, and your business.Citrix XenDesktop, Citrix XenApp, Elastic Layering, Session Container | Read this post >
We're several weeks into our Tech Preview program for Unidesk Layered Images and our connector that pushes the images through Citrix Provisioning Services. The feedback from our first testers has been very positive. Citrix customers with lots of XenApp servers are already seeing how much time (and money) they'll save by patching and updating Windows Server and all of their apps once, instead of once for every silo and vDisk.
But we're also making progress on The Next Big Thing that will revolutionize application management for Windows workspaces: Unidesk Elastic Layering. This new "hot-add" technology attaches our virtual disk layers at user logon to virtual desktops and - in an industry first - individual XenApp sessions. You'll be able to deliver one-off apps to users on-demand based on AD user and group membership and offer fully personalized workspaces, without the overhead of dedicated persistent machines for every user.
Here with a first look demo of Unidesk Elastic Layering attaching apps to a XenApp session is our Chief Solution Architect Ron Oglesby.Unidesk 4.0, Unidesk Elastic Layering, Real-Time App Delivery | Read this post >
Ever since we announced the new Unidesk layering innovations for Citrix XenApp at Citrix Summit, we've seen a record number of registrations for our Tech Preview program. People are also wanting to know more about the new capabilities. Here's the first in a series of closer looks at each of them.
We'll start with our new Layered Images and integration with Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS). For the first time, 10s or even 100s of XenApp servers can be built and managed from a single instance of Windows Server and single instances of all applications that only need to be patched once - even across different XenApp silos and versions.Citrix XenApp, Citrix PVS, XenApp Image Management | Read this post >
Today at Citrix Summit in Las Vegas, we announced major new layering innovations for Citrix XenApp that will change how everyone looks at Server-Based Computing (SBC). Our last blog set the stage for why today's Unidesk-XenApp news is so big. Here, we summarize the press release and the impact on enterprise IT organizations and service providers who are using Citrix XenApp -- as well as XenDesktop -- for modern workspace delivery.Citrix XenDesktop, Citrix XenApp, Unidesk Layering, Elastic Layering, Session Container, AppDNA, Citrix PVS, Persistent Session, XenApp Personlization | Read this post >
Citrix XenApp is trusted infrastructure, used by thousands of enterprises and service providers to remotely deliver Windows apps to any endpoint device. Unidesk is making a major announcement at Citrix Summit in Las Vegas that will be the biggest thing to hit XenApp since it was first introduced as "Winframe" back in the late 1990s. Yes, that big! To set the stage for our announcement and help you understand the incredible value that Unidesk will bring to Citrix customers, here's a quick look at the history of XenApp and the XenApp landscape today.Image Management, Citrix XenApp, application layering, Personalization, Patch Management, Citrix, Unidesk 4.0, Persistent Session | Read this post >
When you hear hybrid cloud, you probably think of dividing up workloads across on-premises infrastructure and one or more public clouds. This week, one of our customers will share how they've built an internal hybrid cloud to deliver 2,000 virtual desktops to their employees.
Leith Automotive Group, one of the largest auto dealers in North Carolina, will explain in a live webinar how they deployed their first 800 desktops on VMware vSphere with Unidesk and VMware Horizon, and why they're rolling out the remaining 1,200 desktops on Hyper-V with Unidesk and Microsoft VDI.Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft VDI, Webinar, Hybrid Cloud, VMware vSphere, Case Study | Read this post >
I spent last week in Canada, where I met with hundreds of IT pros at the Microsoft MVP Days Community Roadshow. At our stops in Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton, we heard the same IT challenges repeated:
Unidesk was a big hit on the roadshow because our layering innovation offers relief from these challenges when it comes to the delivery of Windows desktops and applications:Microsoft VDI, azure, Citrix XenApp, Application Delivery, VMware | Read this post >
Gartner analyst Mark Lockwood recently blogged that end user computing (EUC) vendors and customers focus so much on the end user experience that we sometimes forget about the VDI administrator. In his post "Administrator Experience Matters," Lockwood says "an often-overlooked aspect of all of these EUC platforms and tools is the effort involved from the administrator to deploy, configure, manage, and troubleshoot them."
It's hard not to agree. We would even take it one step further. Providing an administrative experience that makes virtual desktops easier to manage than physical PCs is critical to building a business case for VDI. While Microsoft VDI with Unidesk has finally made virtual desktops less expensive on a pure CapEx basis, most VDI solutions require OpEx savings to justify their higher cost.
Unidesk admittedly doesn't address every issue with the administrative experience. But our layering technology does solve 3 big ones that impact VDI ROI. Here they are.Read this post >
IDC has published the 2015 edition of its “IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Virtual Client Computing Software 2015 Vendor Assessment” (Doc #256606, June 2015). Unidesk was one of seven vendors included in the report, and was named a Major Player.
We are very proud to have earned this position. Since the start of the year, we have transformed our company from managing virtual desktops on the VMware platform to managing all forms of remote desktops and applications.award, IDC | Read this post >

Sanford C. Bernstein just released "MSFT Q315: Who's Got the Biggest Cloud Now? ...And It Grows Faster Too!!!" The Wall Street brokerage firm's analysis of Microsoft's Q3 results found that the Commerical Cloud segment - which includes Microsoft Azure - helped the company beat consensus estimates for revenue, EPS, and operating margin.
Bernstein Senior Analyst Mark Moerdler writes "Microsoft's Commercial Cloud now has an annualized revenue run rate of $6.3B and grew 111% in constant currency this quarter. Note this makes their Commercial Cloud larger than Salesforce.com and growing over 3x as fast." Later on he reports that "customer usage of Azure compute doubled."
To sustain this incredible pace, however, Azure management tools will be needed. Here's why.azure | Read this post >
We've been getting a lot of feedback on our blog VDI Cheaper Than PCs. Several people have raised some good points and asked for additional information about the customer's choices.
One question was how replacing PCs with thin clients would impact the cost comparison, and whether Microsoft VDA would also be a factor. I'll try to answer that question here.BYOD, Cost | Read this post >
This is part one of a two part post comparing VDI and physical PC costs. Read part two here.
Almost everyone agrees that virtual desktops are better desktops. What's held VDI back is that it costs more than buying new PCs. If someone could finally deliver a Windows virtual machine that is cheaper "all-in" than a PC, the last barrier to adoption would fall, and the entire business world would flock to VDI.VDI, ROI, Cost | Read this post >
