Should Citrix XenApp be used to virtualize apps for XenDesktop VDI?

Posted by Jeff Pitsch on Nov 21, 2016

As a Citrix Technology Professional, I've worked with hundreds of Citrix customers who are starting to implement VDI with Citrix XenDesktop. Most have been using Citrix XenApp for years to publish a handful of core applications to physical PCs. Surprisingly, some are thinking they'll just continue using XenApp to publish these core apps to XenDesktop virtual desktops, even though they are implementing Unidesk to streamline application and image management for the new VDI environments.

When I explain the cost, performance, managability, and network ramifications of doing this, and the different options Unidesk now gives them for both XenApp and XenDesktop, they say, "Of course, why didn't I realize that?" It's not their fault - nobody has explained it to them! That's what I'll try to do in this blog.

Unidesk Now Supports Citrix XenServer

Posted by Andrea Abernathy on Oct 27, 2016

Ever since Unidesk won a Best of Citrix Synergy award for bringing industry-leading application and image management innovations to Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, many Citrix customers have been asking when we'll support XenServer. While many are already deploying Unidesk with Citrix's desktop virtualization and application publishing solutions on Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere, a big part of the market uses XenServer as their primary hypervisor.

The wait is over. We're happy to announce that Unidesk now fully supports XenServer! Here is what "full support" means.

Citrix Service Providers Automate and Scale Operations with Unidesk

Posted by Tom Rose on Oct 12, 2016

In a previous post, I shared how an enterprise customer will save more than $3 million by using Unidesk to streamline application and image management, expand Citrix XenApp hosted workspaces to all users, and put an end to costly PC refresh cycles. Citrix Service Providers (CSP) are recognizing that the automation and efficiencies provided by Unidesk can greatly impact their bottom lines, too.

Here's a quick look at why large and small CSPs alike are choosing Unidesk to reduce costs, improve service, and on-board more customers without adding more staff. At the end, you'll see how one mid-sized CSP expects to trim more than $1.75 million off of its annual cost of operations, based on the real-world numbers they gave us.

Customer Extends Citrix XenApp with Unidesk - Projects $3.6M Savings

Posted by Tom Rose on Sep 12, 2016

We're winning enterprise customers since the launch of our new, highly scalable Unidesk 4 platform, which now supports VMware Horizon in addition to Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop. The larger size and scope of these projects, however, puts a much greater emphasis on economic return. You can't blame CFOs for wanting to know how fast Unidesk is going to pay for itself and how they'll save money.

One area of impact that has caught their attention is using Unidesk to better leverage existing Citrix XenApp investments instead of perpetuating costly PC refresh cycles. Here's the situation at one healthcare organization, who plans to save more than $3.6 million by not having to buy 3,900 new PCs.

Azure RemoteApp to Become Citrix XenApp Express - Unidesk Will Simplify App and Image Management

Posted by Tom Rose on Aug 25, 2016

While Desktops as a Service (DaaS) can provide infrastructure-free access to Windows apps, there are still challenges:

  • How to upload and manage custom Windows applications and images in the cloud.
  • How to provision unique applications to different users.
  • How to manage multiple Windows images and keep applications up to date.

Unidesk solves these challenges today for Azure IaaS and Azure RemoteApp. We also enable apps to be seamlessly migrated from on-premises VDI and XenApp/RDSH environments to Azure, without having to build new images or re-package apps. These are two of the reasons we won Best of Citrix Synergy for New Technology at Citrix’s annual conference in May.

Real-Time App Delivery for Citrix XenApp and VDI – a Deeper Look at Unidesk Elastic Layering

Posted by Thomas Willingham on Jul 27, 2016

Elastic LayeringTM was announced back in April, when we provided a preview of how Unidesk 4 could deliver unique apps in real time to Citrix XenApp sessions. This new ability to attach virtual disks at login and give XenApp users logging into the same server different apps was one of the reasons that Unidesk 4 won Best of Citrix Synergy Award for New Technology. Now that this capability is available for XenApp, and for VDI – it’s time to  take a deeper look at the technology. After my technical overview, I include a short video by our Chief Solution Architect Ron Oglesby that visually explains how Unidesk Elastic Layering works.

Citrix XenApp vs XenDesktop: How to Decide

Posted by Tom Rose on May 23, 2016

Shared hosted desktops and published apps with Citrix XenApp? Or full virtual machines for every user with Citrix XenDesktop? The Citrix XenApp vs XenDesktop decision used to be pretty clear. But with new application layering innovations that can deliver unique apps and personalization in real-time to every XenApp user, the line between traditional server based computing (XenApp) and VDI (XenDesktop) has been blurred.

This blog summarizes the traditional differences between XenApp and XenDesktop, explains how Unidesk application management software changes the equation, and then provides a new decision matrix for the two Citrix hosted workspace solutions, so you can decide which is right for you, your users, and your business.

Simplifying XenApp Image Management with Unidesk Layered Images

Posted by Tom Rose on Feb 9, 2016

Ever since we announced the new Unidesk layering innovations for Citrix XenApp at Citrix Summit, we've seen a record number of registrations for our Tech Preview program. People are also wanting to know more about the new capabilities. Here's the first in a series of closer looks at each of them.

We'll start with our new Layered Images and integration with Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS). For the first time, 10s or even 100s of XenApp servers can be built and managed from a single instance of Windows Server and single instances of all applications that only need to be patched once - even across different XenApp silos and versions.

VDI: To Persist or Not To Persist

Posted by Spencer Sun on Dec 3, 2015

One of the big decisions to make when implementing VDI is whether to provide Persistent or Non-Persistent desktops. Users are accustomed to saving their settings, installing applications and having a consistent, persistent experience on their physical machines. So they'll expect the same in VDI. What should you do if you're in IT?

Use RDSH and Unidesk to Solve Windows 10 App Compatibility Issues

Posted by TJ Racherla on Dec 2, 2015

A new announcement from Gartner confirms what most in the IT industry already know: Windows 10 is well on its way to becoming the most widely installed operating system ever. Microsoft estimates that 12 million business PCs are running Windows 10 and that it has been downloaded over 110 million times. Gartner agrees, predicting that 50% of all enterprises will have started Windows deployments by the end of 2016. What does this mean for enterprise IT?

Already, employees are bringing their own devices to work with Windows 10 preinstalled, and are expecting access to existing Windows business apps. This presents a major challenge for IT, as some older apps may be incompatible with the new OS. If your IT organization isn't ready to do a complete Windows 10 migration, how do you handle this Windows 10 app compatibility issue? With remote desktop session host (RDSH) technology and Unidesk app layering.

MVPDays: Meeting IT's Needs for Simple, Flexible, Low Cost App Delivery

Posted by Tom Rose on Sep 30, 2015

I spent last week in Canada, where I met with hundreds of IT pros at the Microsoft MVP Days Community Roadshow. At our stops in Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton, we heard the same IT challenges repeated:

  • "Our IT project list is constantly expanding."
  • "They expect us to do more but they don't give us more budget."
  • "There aren't enough of us in IT to get everything we want done."
  • "We need tools that simplify our work and make us more efficient."
  • "I wish I could offload basic management tasks to less experienced admins."

Unidesk was a big hit on the roadshow because our layering innovation offers relief from these challenges when it comes to the delivery of Windows desktops and applications:

Lifecycle Management of Mission Critical Applications on XenApp or RDSH

Posted by Andrew Nadeau on Sep 28, 2015

One thing Unidesk is known for is our ability to layer any application and deliver it as a virtual disk container in minutes. Our application layering has proven to be superior to other application delivery models such as bundling apps into an image, isolating apps with application virtualization technology, or using above-the-OS layering technologies that struggle with app compatibility and interoperability issues.

One thing we're not as well known for – but which is becoming immensely valuable to our Citrix XenApp and Microsoft RDSH customers – is our ability to manage the full lifecycle of mission-critical applications.

XenApp 6.5 Upgrade to 7.6: What You Need To Know Before Migrating

Posted by Ron Oglesby on Jun 30, 2015

If you’re on Citrix XenApp 5.0, XenApp 6.0, or XenApp 6.5, you know the upgrade to 7.6 isn't going to be easy. At least XenApp 6.5 support has been extended, allowing you to delay the inevitable. But there's some good news in this delay. You now have time to take advantage of a new solution that will make all future XenApp upgrades a piece of cake, while making your server farm a lot easier to manage in the process.
