Should Citrix XenApp be used to virtualize apps for XenDesktop VDI?

Posted by Jeff Pitsch on Nov 21, 2016

As a Citrix Technology Professional, I've worked with hundreds of Citrix customers who are starting to implement VDI with Citrix XenDesktop. Most have been using Citrix XenApp for years to publish a handful of core applications to physical PCs. Surprisingly, some are thinking they'll just continue using XenApp to publish these core apps to XenDesktop virtual desktops, even though they are implementing Unidesk to streamline application and image management for the new VDI environments.

When I explain the cost, performance, managability, and network ramifications of doing this, and the different options Unidesk now gives them for both XenApp and XenDesktop, they say, "Of course, why didn't I realize that?" It's not their fault - nobody has explained it to them! That's what I'll try to do in this blog.

Ever since Unidesk won a Best of Citrix Synergy award for bringing industry-leading application and image management innovations to Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, many Citrix customers have been asking when we'll support XenServer. While many are already deploying Unidesk with Citrix's desktop virtualization and application publishing solutions on Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere, a big part of the market uses XenServer as their primary hypervisor.

The wait is over. We're happy to announce that Unidesk now fully supports XenServer! Here is what "full support" means.

Citrix Service Providers Automate and Scale Operations with Unidesk

Posted by Tom Rose on Oct 12, 2016

In a previous post, I shared how an enterprise customer will save more than $3 million by using Unidesk to streamline application and image management, expand Citrix XenApp hosted workspaces to all users, and put an end to costly PC refresh cycles. Citrix Service Providers (CSP) are recognizing that the automation and efficiencies provided by Unidesk can greatly impact their bottom lines, too.

Here's a quick look at why large and small CSPs alike are choosing Unidesk to reduce costs, improve service, and on-board more customers without adding more staff. At the end, you'll see how one mid-sized CSP expects to trim more than $1.75 million off of its annual cost of operations, based on the real-world numbers they gave us.

Citrix XenApp vs XenDesktop: How to Decide

Posted by Tom Rose on May 23, 2016

Shared hosted desktops and published apps with Citrix XenApp? Or full virtual machines for every user with Citrix XenDesktop? The Citrix XenApp vs XenDesktop decision used to be pretty clear. But with new application layering innovations that can deliver unique apps and personalization in real-time to every XenApp user, the line between traditional server based computing (XenApp) and VDI (XenDesktop) has been blurred.

This blog summarizes the traditional differences between XenApp and XenDesktop, explains how Unidesk application management software changes the equation, and then provides a new decision matrix for the two Citrix hosted workspace solutions, so you can decide which is right for you, your users, and your business.

Unidesk Customers Star in Windows IT Pro's "VDI in Manufacturing" Story

Posted by TJ Racherla on Jan 14, 2016

With all the buzz around Unidesk's announced innovations for Citrix XenApp and traditional Server-Based Computing (SBC) this week, it was cool to see our VDI customers in the spotlight again. Windows IT Pro magazine's story "From Water Pumps to Sports Bikes, Manufacturers Like Their VDI" stars two of our manufacturing customers - Dayton Superior and Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing USA. One uses Citrix XenDesktop and the other VMware Horizon for workspace connectivity. But both attribute much of their VDI success to Unidesk, which they use to manage and deliver all of their Windows apps.

VDI Price Analysis

Posted by TJ Racherla on Jun 15, 2015

As any technology matures and becomes more widely adopted, it gets cheaper. That's what's happening with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Citrix, Microsoft and VMware all now offer reliable hypervisors, fast protocols, and robust client support. Management is the remaining gap, and how each vendor looks to fill that gap impacts cost.

VMware has acquired many different tools for application delivery, image management, provisioning, personalization, and disk space optimization, adding capabilities - as well as cost and complexity - to VMware Horizon. Citrix has tried to leverage its existing XenApp tools for XenDesktop VDI. Microsoft has chosen Unidesk as its management partner for Microsoft VDI.

What's the best way to do VDI on a budget? This table offers a VDI price analysis for a 500-user example using data from the VMware Store, Citrix Store, and Unidesk Pricing Tool.

Can't Virtualize Allscripts EHR in VDI? Layer It!

Posted by Jordan Murphy on Nov 5, 2014

Allscripts is the electronic health record (EHR) software for many small and mid-sized medical practices. As more care providers move to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), they need a way to deliver Allscripts EHR to their new virtual desktops. Howerver, as most everyone now knows, and as Gartner covered recently in "The Secret Bottleneck of VDI," application delivery is one of the major reasons for stalled VDI projects and IT headaches. So, it's no surprise that many healthcare IT teams find they can't virtualize Allscripts for VDI application delivery.

Three Leading Law Firms Virtualize Desktops - The End User Perspective

Posted by Tom Rose on Jul 24, 2013

One thing that’s great about being in high tech is you get to work with customers who are visionaries. Take Monday’s announcement, for example, that three of our legal customers have replaced their physical PCs with virtual desktops firm-wide. If you’re in IT, you know that selling this to their end users couldn't have been easy - at least not at first. People can become very set in their ways.

Unidesk 2.0 Launches at VMworld 2012!

Posted by Tom Rose on Aug 22, 2012

The news is out - Unidesk® 2.0 will be launched next week at VMworld 2012 in San Francisco! The only way to bring full desktop layering to Citrix XenDesktop® and VMware View™ is about to get even better. More fault tolerant. Faster. More storage flexibility. Easier to install and configure. Read our press release for details and customer reactions.

For those of you who are new to Unidesk, our desktop layering technology for VDI is being used by hundreds of View and XenDesktop customers to:

  • Simplify app packaging and delivery (replacing ThinApp and App-V app virtualization)
  • Minimize gold image sprawl caused by diverse pool and desktop configurations (replacing View Composer and Citrix Provisioning Server)
  • Create storage-efficient persistent desktops that finally sustain user-installed apps (replacing Linked Clones and profile management).
  • Manage virtual desktops with a complete, unified solution, rather than 5-7 different consoles.

Free Type 1 Hypervisors Pave the Way for Desktop Management Software Reinvention

Posted by Tom Rose on May 23, 2009

It was great to hear the news from Citrix Synergy that XenClient, Citrix's Type 1 hypervisor being built in partnership with Intel, will be offered free of charge.

Back when the news of the Citrix/Intel relationship and Project Independence (the code name for XenClient) first broke, we agreed with the experts who said embedding the bare-metal client hypervisor in the chip would accelerate mainstream adoption.
