When you hear hybrid cloud, you probably think of dividing up workloads across on-premises infrastructure and one or more public clouds. This week, one of our customers will share how they've built an internal hybrid cloud to deliver 2,000 virtual desktops to their employees.
Leith Automotive Group, one of the largest auto dealers in North Carolina, will explain in a live webinar how they deployed their first 800 desktops on VMware vSphere with Unidesk and VMware Horizon, and why they're rolling out the remaining 1,200 desktops on Hyper-V with Unidesk and Microsoft VDI.Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft VDI, Webinar, Hybrid Cloud, VMware vSphere, Case Study | Read this post >
Before we attended the Microsoft MVPDays events in Canada with several of our new Microsoft Hyper-V ecosystem partners, we held a joint webinar with one of them - 5nine Software. 5nine is a fast-growing provider of virtual firewall, antivirus, and intrusion detection solutions. One thing Unidesk and 5nine have in common is agentless management, a key requirement for virtualized environments and workloads like VDI. Here's a short recap of what was discussed in the webinar about why agentless matters.Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft Partner | Read this post >
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) has traditionally been more costly to implement than buying new PCs, preventing organizations from taking advantage of the mobility, security, and productivity advantages.
Microsoft VDI on Hyper-V is half the cost of VMware, making virtual desktops even cheaper than PC refresh. But many think Hyper-V still lags behind VMware technically. As the EBook, 7 Reasons Why VDI with Hyper-V and RDS is Poised for Takeoff explains, that's no longer the case. Here are two more examples from our Technical Blog explaining why Hyper-V may actually be surpassing VMware vSphere when it comes to hosting virtual desktop workloads.Microsoft Hyper-V, Hyper-V, VDI, Data Dedupe | Read this post >
Microsoft VDI on Hyper-V is half the cost of VMware, making virtual desktops even cheaper than PC refresh. But many still think Hyper-V still lags behind VMware technically. As the EBook, 6 Reasons Why VDI with Hyper-V and RDS is Poised for Takeoff explains, that's no longer the case. My recent blog comparing Hyper-V dynamic memory and VMware memory overcommitment is an example of how, when it comes to VDI workloads, Hyper-V may actually be surpassing VMware.
Here's another data point. Hyper-V now offers built-in data deduplication that radically reduces space requirements for both non-persistent AND persistent virtual desktop use cases - something you used to have to pay big bucks to get. This blog takes a closer look.Microsoft Hyper-V, Storage Savings, Data Dedupe | Read this post >
Our Ebook 6 Reasons Why VDI with Hyper-V and RDS is Ready for Takeoff is being downloaded a lot. It's clear that a lot of IT pros are looking for ways to avoid the so-called VMware tax and stretch their IT budgets farther by leveraging the lower cost of Microsoft VDI.
Here's another technical reason to consider Hyper-V over vSphere for hosting virtual desktops: with the enhanced Dynamic Memory improvements for Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012, you can attain higher VM consolidation numbers and improved reliability for restart operations. This can lead to lower costs, especially in pooled VDI environments that have idle or low-load virtual machines.
To understand why you can achieve greater VM density on Hyper-V than vSphere, you need to understand how VMware's Memory Overcommitment and Microsoft's Dynamic Memory technologies work. Let's compare the two.Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft VDI, VMware | Read this post >
We've had some amazing press coverage on our announcement of Unidesk 3.0 and its new support for Microsoft VDI and Hyper-V! My last post summarized some of the articles that came out in the magazines targeting IT professionals. We've had some great pick-up in the publications geared toward VARs and system integrators, too! Check out the video interview with our CEO Don Bulens in CRN and what top VDI resellers have to say about us in Channelnomics!Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft VDI | Read this post >
The biggest news in end user computing last week was that Unidesk 3.0 is now available for Microsoft VDI and Hyper-V! TechTarget, InfoWorld, The Register, OnWindows, Channelnomics, Network World, CRNtv, Infotech Lead, Virtual Strategy Magazine and others ran stories on how Unidesk layering innovation brings simplicity and scalability to the Microsoft VDI platform. We summarize some of the news coverage aimed at IT in this blog. My next post will highlight some of the channel publication coverage.Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft VDI, App Volumes | Read this post >
Here's another video on Unidesk and Microsoft VDI. My last one showed how layering eliminates gold image sprawl in VDI by enabling you to use 1 clean Windows OS layer for all VMs. Today's video shows how Unidesk makes provisioning a desktop or groups of desktops on Hyper-V super-efficient. You'll see how to build VMs from any combination of OS and app layer VHDs, and drop the VMs straight into collections for easy access through RD Connection Broker.Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft VDI, provisioning | Read this post >
In my last video blog, I showed how Unidesk puts an end to application virtualization issues in VDI. and how application layering lets you deliver apps to all RDS desktops from one installation point. Today's video shows how Unidesk eliminates gold image sprawl. You'll only have to patch Windows once for all RDS collections, no matter how differently your desktops are configured.Microsoft Hyper-V, Patch Tuesday, Image Management | Read this post >
In my last video blog, I showed how Unidesk for Hyper-V brings simplicity and scalability to the mangement of RDS collections and desktops. Today's video shows how Unidesk application layering technology makes application virtualization issues a thing of the past for Microsoft VDI.Application Virtualization, Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft VDI, Layering | Read this post >
We're contnuing our march toward the big Unidesk for Hyper-V release with two more pre-announcement events this week - a joint webinar with Pure Storage and Microsoft, and a Unidesk session at TechReady20, Microsoft's internal technical conference for Microsoft employees.Pure Storage, Microsoft Hyper-V, RDS | Read this post >
According to IDC, Microsoft Hyper-V has grown to capture nearly a third of the hypervisor market over the last five years. Yet, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) deployments on the Microsoft VDI platform haven't grown as fast. That's about to change.
Unidesk is a big reason. As Microsoft explained when they previewed Unidesk for Hyper-V at Tech Ed Europe, our desktop layering innovation extends Microsoft VDI with greater simplicity, flexibility, and scale. Desktop provisioning, image management, application layering, personalization, disk space savings, RDS collection management, and more are now offered through Unidesk's one, easy-to-use console.
But we're not the only reason why VDI with Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is poised for takeoff. Here are 5 reasons:Microsoft Hyper-V | Read this post >
Allscripts is the electronic health record (EHR) software for many small and mid-sized medical practices. As more care providers move to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), they need a way to deliver Allscripts EHR to their new virtual desktops. Howerver, as most everyone now knows, and as Gartner covered recently in "The Secret Bottleneck of VDI," application delivery is one of the major reasons for stalled VDI projects and IT headaches. So, it's no surprise that many healthcare IT teams find they can't virtualize Allscripts for VDI application delivery.Citrix XenDesktop, VMware Horizon View, Healthcare, Nimble Storage, Allscripts, Imprivata, Microsoft Hyper-V | Read this post >
